Self Care 101

“Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean “me first”…. it means ME TOO.”

-L.R. Knosts

  • Self care is not selfish.

It is not your job to be everything to everyone. Moreover, it’s not selfish to take care of yourself and make your wellness and happiness a priority. You cannot serve from an empty cup nor can you be your best when your depleted and overextended. Lastly, you cannot adequarely care for others if you are not first fully caring for yourself.

  • Self care is Proactive.

It’s starting to rain. Being proactive is grabbing that trusty umbrella before you leave the house. Reactive is going back to get it after your clothes have already been soaked. Build in time BEFORE you need it. Don’t let your wellness fall through the cracks. Intentionally living well will set you up for success in all aspects of your life, including care giving.

  • Self care is a habit.

Start small. Build upon tiny little changes that set you up for “living well.” Taking care of yourself and making sure you are in a good spot (mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, etc) will only make caregiving easier and more fulfilling. Work on creating and implementing achievable, daily habits that support a good life.

Just like the oxygen mask on the airplane … you gotta put your mask on first.

*Your mask providing air TO YOU will allow you to help others.
